Description

In the waning years of the 19th century, Eugene V. Debs emerged as a working-class leader, a hero of the railroad workers of the U.S. and Canada. After working for the railroad – first as a laborer and then a locomotive fireman - Debs went on to lead the Firemen’s union (BLF), assist in the organizing of other rail unions, and ultimately organize the nation’s first industrial union – the American Railway Union (ARU). By the damn of the 20th century, Debs emerged as the leader of the Socialist Party and from there went on to assist in the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) helping to pioneer a fighting union politics that organized all workers, becoming the beloved figurehead of American radicalism. Debs’ story – presented in carton format here - is the story of labor battles in industrializing America, of a working-class politics grown directly out of the Midwestern heartland, and of a distinctly American vision of socialism.
